Fort Rucker
Daleville, Alabama · Army · Formerly Fort Novosel (2023–2025)

Fort Rucker is one of the most affordable Army installations. The Wiregrass region of southeast Alabama has a very low cost of living, and BAH creates a substantial surplus at every pay grade. Most residents are flight school students on shorter tours — renting is the default, and the surplus is significant.

Local cost of living context
Overall cost of living is roughly roughly 18–22% below the national average.
Alabama taxes military pay at up to 5.0%. However, Alabama's property taxes are among the lowest in the nation. BAH and BAS remain tax-free.
What to know before you move
Fort Rucker is rural and isolated — Daleville and Ozark are tiny, and Dothan (the nearest real city) is 20 minutes south. The mistake is expecting amenities that don't exist. The upside: Alabama has some of the lowest property taxes in the country, and your BAH goes incredibly far. Enterprise and Dothan offer more options if you're willing to commute 15–20 minutes.
