E-3 Pay in 2026: Basic Pay, BAH & What It All Adds Up To

The pay chart says an E-3 earns $2,836.80 to $3,198.00 a month — but basic pay is only the taxable slice of the package. This page shows the full 2026 E-3 pay progression by years of service, then adds the parts a base-pay table hides: housing allowance, food allowance, and what they're worth because they're excluded from federal taxable income.

2026 E-3 basic pay by years of service

Monthly basic pay from the 2026 DFAS pay table, effective January 1, 2026 (3.8% raise). E-3 pay has only 3 longevity steps — the table below shows each step.

Years of serviceMonthly basic payAnnual
Under 2 years$2,836.80$34,042
Over 2 years$3,015.00$36,180
Over 3 years$3,198.00$38,376

What an E-3 actually receives each month

Worked example: E-3, over 2 years, without dependents, living off-installation. Figures use the national median BAH across all 338 military housing areas — your actual BAH depends on your duty station.

Basic pay (over 2 years)$3,015.00
BAH (national median, without dependents)$1,520
BAS (enlisted rate)$476.95
Total monthly$5,012

Many E-3s still live in the barracks — for them, the BAH line above is in-kind value rather than cash. The allowance converts to monthly cash when a member is authorized to live off-installation.

That's about $60,143 per year — and because BAH and BAS are excluded from federal taxable income, this package is worth roughly $2,876 more per year than the same dollars paid as taxable salary. Counting that tax advantage and the value of TRICARE coverage, a civilian job would need to pay about $65,059 to match it.

Tax advantage estimated at a 12% marginal federal rate (single filer) for this base pay; your actual benefit depends on your income, filing status, and state taxes.

What E-3 means — and what changes financially

E-3 is Private First Class in the Army, Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps, Airman First Class in the Air Force, Seaman in the Navy, and Specialist 3 in the Space Force.

E-3 is where many junior enlisted members spend the longest stretch of their first enlistment — Private First Class in the Army, Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps, Airman First Class in the Air Force, Seaman in the Navy, and Specialist 3 in the Space Force. Most members reach it within their first one to two years.

E-3 is also the first grade with longevity steps: the rate rises at over 2 and again at over 3 years of service. From E-4 up, the pay table deepens further — but at E-3, advancing to the next grade still moves pay more than time does.

Two financial mechanics tend to land during the E-3 window. First, under the Blended Retirement System two things happen at the two-year mark: government matching contributions begin, and the automatic 1% contribution the government has been making since the first months of service becomes fully the member’s money. Second, fund allocation starts to matter as the balance grows; the default Lifecycle fund, the G fund, and the stock-index funds behave very differently over a 20-year horizon, and the difference compounds from whatever is set in these early years.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an E-3 make in 2026?

E-3 monthly basic pay in 2026 ranges from $2,836.80 to $3,198.00, depending on years of service. An E-3 over 2 years of service earns $3,015.00/month in basic pay. Basic pay is only part of military compensation — most members also receive BAH and BAS on top of it.

What is E-3 total compensation with BAH and BAS?

Using the 2026 national median BAH without dependents ($1,520/month), an E-3 with over 2 years of service and no dependents receives about $5,012/month — $3,015.00 basic pay, $1,520 BAH, and $476.95 BAS — roughly $60,143 per year. Actual totals depend on duty station, since BAH varies by location.

How long does it take to make E-3?

Most members reach E-3 within one to two years of service — advancement from E-2 is largely automatic with satisfactory service, and some enlistment contracts grant E-3 at entry. Timelines vary by branch and contract.

Is E-3 pay taxable?

Basic pay is subject to federal income tax and, in most states, state income tax. BAH and BAS are excluded from federal taxable income, which is why the real value of an E-3's package is higher than the base-pay number alone suggests. In designated combat zones, enlisted pay is excluded from federal income tax under the Combat Zone Tax Exclusion.
