O-6 Pay in 2026: Basic Pay, BAH & What It All Adds Up To

The pay chart says an O-6 earns $8,751.30 to $15,408.30 a month — but basic pay is only the taxable slice of the package. This page shows the full 2026 O-6 pay progression by years of service, then adds the parts a base-pay table hides: housing allowance, food allowance, and what they're worth because they're excluded from federal taxable income.

What an O-6 actually receives each month

Worked example: O-6, over 22 years, with dependents, living off-installation. Figures use the national median BAH across all 338 military housing areas — your actual BAH depends on your duty station.

Basic pay (over 22 years)$14,112.90
BAH (national median, with dependents)$3,026
BAS (officer rate)$328.48
Total monthly$17,467

That's about $209,609 per year — and because BAH and BAS are excluded from federal taxable income, this package is worth roughly $9,661 more per year than the same dollars paid as taxable salary. Counting that tax advantage and the value of TRICARE coverage, a civilian job would need to pay about $226,109 to match it.

Tax advantage estimated at a 24% marginal federal rate (single filer) for this base pay; your actual benefit depends on your income, filing status, and state taxes.

What O-6 means — and what changes financially

O-6 is Colonel in the Army, Colonel in the Marine Corps, Colonel in the Air Force, Captain in the Navy, and Colonel in the Space Force.

O-6 is the senior field grade — Colonel in the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force, and Captain in the Navy. Brigade, wing, and major-ship command happen here, and for the large majority of officers who reach it, O-6 is the terminal grade: promotion to the general and flag ranks above it is rare and tightly capped.

Selection typically comes around 21 to 23 years of service, by competitive board. The O-6 pay table is the longest in the officer chart — running all the way to over 30 years — so pay continues climbing for a decade or more after pinning on.

Two mechanics define O-6 pay. First, the long longevity run means the final-years steps land directly in the highest-36-months average the pension formula uses, which is why O-6 retirements at 26 to 30 years produce markedly larger pensions than the same grade at 23. Second, O-6 is the last grade paid entirely from the longevity table — the general and flag grades above it run into the Executive Schedule pay cap, as covered on the pay charts page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an O-6 make in 2026?

O-6 monthly basic pay in 2026 ranges from $8,751.30 to $15,408.30, depending on years of service. An O-6 over 22 years of service earns $14,112.90/month in basic pay. Basic pay is only part of military compensation — most members also receive BAH and BAS on top of it.

What is O-6 total compensation with BAH and BAS?

Using the 2026 national median BAH with dependents ($3,026/month), an O-6 with over 22 years of service and dependents receives about $17,467/month — $14,112.90 basic pay, $3,026 BAH, and $328.48 BAS — roughly $209,609 per year. Actual totals depend on duty station, since BAH varies by location.

When do officers typically reach O-6?

Usually around 21 to 23 years of commissioned service, by competitive selection board, and only a minority of each year group is selected. For most officers who reach it, O-6 is the final grade of a career.

Is O-6 pay taxable?

Basic pay is subject to federal income tax and, in most states, state income tax. BAH and BAS are excluded from federal taxable income, which is why the real value of an O-6's package is higher than the base-pay number alone suggests. In designated combat zones, the Combat Zone Tax Exclusion applies to officers as well, capped at the highest enlisted pay rate.
