E-8 Pay in 2026: Basic Pay, BAH & What It All Adds Up To

The pay chart says an E-8 earns $5,656.50 to $8,067.30 a month — but basic pay is only the taxable slice of the package. This page shows the full 2026 E-8 pay progression by years of service, then adds the parts a base-pay table hides: housing allowance, food allowance, and what they're worth because they're excluded from federal taxable income.

2026 E-8 basic pay by years of service

Monthly basic pay from the 2026 DFAS pay table, effective January 1, 2026 (3.8% raise). Find the row matching your completed years of service — rates repeat between longevity steps, exactly as DFAS publishes them. E-8 rates begin at the over-8-years column — DFAS publishes no E-8 rate below that point, so earlier rows show a dash.

What an E-8 actually receives each month

Worked example: E-8, over 16 years, with dependents, living off-installation. Figures use the national median BAH across all 338 military housing areas — your actual BAH depends on your duty station.

Basic pay (over 16 years)$6,448.20
BAH (national median, with dependents)$2,484
BAS (enlisted rate)$476.95
Total monthly$9,409

That's about $112,910 per year — and because BAH and BAS are excluded from federal taxable income, this package is worth roughly $7,817 more per year than the same dollars paid as taxable salary. Counting that tax advantage and the value of TRICARE coverage, a civilian job would need to pay about $127,567 to match it.

Tax advantage estimated at a 22% marginal federal rate (single filer) for this base pay; your actual benefit depends on your income, filing status, and state taxes.

What E-8 means — and what changes financially

E-8 is Master Sergeant or First Sergeant in the Army, Master Sergeant or First Sergeant in the Marine Corps, Senior Master Sergeant in the Air Force, Senior Chief Petty Officer in the Navy, and Senior Master Sergeant in the Space Force.

E-8 splits into two roles in the Army and Marine Corps — Master Sergeant (technical track) or First Sergeant (the unit’s senior enlisted advisor) — while the Air Force and Space Force call it Senior Master Sergeant and the Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer. Selection rates are small; E-8s are a thin layer of the force.

The E-8 pay table starts at over 8 years of service — DFAS publishes no E-8 rate below that point, which is why the early columns above show dashes rather than dollar figures. In practice almost no one pins on E-8 anywhere near the floor; mid-to-late teens is the common window.

At E-8 the longevity table keeps producing raises late into a career — steps continue through over 30 years. That matters mechanically: a pension is computed from the highest 36 months of basic pay, so raises earned in the final years at E-8 flow directly into the High-3 average the formula uses. The same longevity steps that look small as monthly deltas compound into the retirement calculation.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an E-8 make in 2026?

E-8 monthly basic pay in 2026 ranges from $5,656.50 to $8,067.30, depending on years of service. An E-8 over 16 years of service earns $6,448.20/month in basic pay. Basic pay is only part of military compensation — most members also receive BAH and BAS on top of it.

What is E-8 total compensation with BAH and BAS?

Using the 2026 national median BAH with dependents ($2,484/month), an E-8 with over 16 years of service and dependents receives about $9,409/month — $6,448.20 basic pay, $2,484 BAH, and $476.95 BAS — roughly $112,910 per year. Actual totals depend on duty station, since BAH varies by location.

What years of service does E-8 pay start at?

The DFAS pay table publishes E-8 rates beginning at the "over 8 years" column — there is no E-8 rate below that point, because promotion to E-8 effectively never occurs that early. Most members who reach E-8 do so in their mid-to-late teens of service.

Is E-8 pay taxable?

Basic pay is subject to federal income tax and, in most states, state income tax. BAH and BAS are excluded from federal taxable income, which is why the real value of an E-8's package is higher than the base-pay number alone suggests. In designated combat zones, enlisted pay is excluded from federal income tax under the Combat Zone Tax Exclusion.
